Chasing God
Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Have you ever watched a dog chase its tail? Round and round it goes in a frantic circle, expending enormous energy trying to catch something that’s already part of itself. The pursuit is exhausting, and even if successful, the reward proves disappointing.
Many of us live our lives in similar fashion. We chase after promotions, possessions, pleasures, and popularity with relentless determination. We’re certain that the next accomplishment, the next purchase, or the next relationship will finally satisfy our deepest longings. Yet when we catch these things, the satisfaction proves fleeting, and we quickly begin chasing something else.
Jesus addressed this universal human tendency in His Sermon on the Mount. After describing how people anxiously pursue food, drink, and clothing, He offered a revolutionary alternative: “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.” This isn’t merely good advice; it’s a complete reordering of priorities.
Notice Jesus didn’t condemn our desires for provision and well-being. Instead, He redirected our primary pursuit. When we chase after God’s kingdom—His rule and reign in our lives—the things we truly need find their proper place. As Augustine famously observed, “Our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”
The irony is striking: when we stop chasing things and start chasing God, we often find He provides the very things we need without the exhausting pursuit. But even more importantly, we discover that knowing Him satisfies deeper than any possession or achievement ever could.
Are you tired of running in circles? Perhaps it’s time to change what you’re chasing.
Today’s Prayer: Father, forgive me for the times I’ve exhausted myself chasing things that cannot satisfy. Help me find my deepest satisfaction in Your presence rather than in temporary treasures. Amen.
Reflection Question: What are you currently chasing that may be distracting you from seeking God’s kingdom first?
