More Than A Friend
John 15:13 – “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
Friendship comes in varying depths. There’s the casual acquaintance who remembers your name, the social friend who invites you to gatherings, and the close friend who knows your struggles. But few friendships reach the sacrificial level Jesus described: willingness to die for another.
Yet this is precisely the friendship Christ offers. “I have called you friends,” He told His disciples after explaining His impending sacrifice. Unlike human relationships that often begin with surface-level connection and gradually deepen, Jesus initiated friendship at the deepest possible level—laying down His life before we even recognized our need for Him. As Scripture reminds us, “Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:7-8).
This divine friendship offers extraordinary privileges. Jesus told His disciples, “I no longer call you servants… Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” We receive divine confidence, spiritual insight, and intimate access to God’s heart.
But friendship works both ways. While Jesus perfectly fulfills His role, our side often falls short. He asks, “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” True friendship with Jesus means reciprocation—not through earning His love, but through responding to it with obedience, loyalty, and devotion.
The question isn’t whether Jesus has been a faithful friend to us—His cross settles that forever. The real question is: What kind of friend have we been to Him?
Today’s Prayer: Jesus, thank You for offering me friendship at the highest possible cost. Show me where I’ve been a distant or unfaithful friend. Amen.
Reflection Question: If someone examined your calendar, spending, and daily choices, what evidence would they find that Jesus is truly your closest friend?
