Wrinkled Pants
Proverbs 27:17 – “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
The wrinkled pants hang in the closet, unwearable for any professional setting. Without intervention, those creases and folds remain permanent fixtures in the fabric. Only the application of heat and pressure from an iron can transform them back into their proper form—smooth, crisp, and ready for use.
Wrinkled clothing requires deliberate attention. No amount of wishing will smooth those creases. The iron must be heated, the garment laid flat, and pressure applied methodically across every wrinkled surface. Sometimes stubborn wrinkles require extra time, extra heat, and extra pressure.
Spiritual lives often resemble those wrinkled pants. Habits form creases in character. Past hurts create deep folds in relationships. Unchallenged thinking patterns wrinkle our perspectives. Left unaddressed, these spiritual wrinkles become permanent features of who we are.
God, the master of transformation, applies His divine iron to these areas of our lives. Sometimes He uses the heat of His Word to reshape our thinking, as the psalmist discovered: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105). Other times, He allows the heat of challenging circumstances to press against our resistance, smoothing out wrinkles of pride, selfishness, or fear.
The ironing process is rarely comfortable—heat and pressure seldom are. Yet the discomfort serves a purpose. Each application of divine heat has transformation in mind, not punishment. Each press of circumstantial pressure aims to restore rather than harm.
The wrinkles in fabric tell a story of where the garment has been. Similarly, the wrinkles in our lives reveal our journey. But God isn’t finished with either the fabric or with us. Under His transformative touch, what was creased becomes smooth, what was unusable becomes serviceable again.
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, give us courage to submit to Your divine ironing process, even when the heat of Your Word or circumstances feels uncomfortable. Amen.
Reflection Question: What “wrinkle” in your character or thinking has God been applying heat and pressure to lately?
