I Need A Push

2 Corinthians 4:6 – “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.”

On a popular reality show, contestants faced a high-diving challenge. One participant froze at the edge, paralyzed by fear despite wanting to complete the task. After several minutes of hesitation, a teammate simply stepped forward and gave them a gentle push. The momentary shock gave way to exhilaration as they successfully completed the dive they couldn’t initiate themselves.

“I just needed a push,” they laughed after surfacing. “Why couldn’t I just jump on my own?”

How often believers find themselves in similar positions spiritually—knowing what step to take next but hesitating at the edge. The promotion that requires moving to a new city. The ministry opportunity that demands public speaking. The relationship that needs honest conversation. In these moments, wouldn’t it be easier if God simply pushed us forward?

Yet God’s approach to human growth respects our autonomy rather than overriding it. He illuminates the path but rarely forces the journey. As Moses told the Israelites, “I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live” (Deuteronomy 30:19). The choice remained theirs.

God works more through invitation than intervention. He enlightens the mind, warms the heart, and strengthens the will—but the step of faith remains ours to take. His Spirit whispers rather than shoves.

This divine restraint isn’t absence or indifference. Rather, it reflects a deep respect for human dignity and God’s desire for relationship over mere compliance. True growth happens not when we’re pushed into action but when we choose it, even through our fear.

The edge may feel frightening, but the One who calls us forward sees both sides of the jump.

Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for respecting our freedom even when we hesitate to move forward in faith. Give us courage when we stand at the edge of what You’re calling us to do. Amen.

Reflection Question: What step of faith do you sense God inviting you to take that you’ve been hesitating to begin?
