The Competition

1 Peter 5:8 – “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour“

In corporate boardrooms across the globe, strategy sessions unfold with military precision. Market analysts study competitors’ every move. Intelligence teams monitor product developments. Executives evaluate pricing strategies. No successful business takes competition lightly. They invest significant resources to understand what they’re up against—knowing that underestimating rivals can lead to market collapse.

This business principle illuminates a spiritual reality many believers overlook. While we acknowledge God’s supremacy, we often fail to recognize the strategic sophistication of competing influences vying for our devotion.

Scripture doesn’t portray these competing forces as bumbling adversaries but as calculated strategists. Peter warns of an enemy who “prowls” with purpose. Paul acknowledges “principalities and powers” that operate with tactical precision. Jesus himself spoke of a thief who “comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10).

These spiritual competitors study human patterns, identify vulnerabilities, and strategically target moments of weakness. They understand that direct frontal assaults rarely succeed against committed believers. Instead, they employ subtler tactics—gradual compromises, attractive distractions, plausible alternatives to God’s ways.

The social media notification that interrupts prayer. The subtle pride that turns service into self-promotion. The legitimate blessing that slowly becomes an idol. These aren’t random obstacles but strategic incursions designed to divert devotion from its rightful recipient.

Acknowledging these competing influences isn’t cause for fear but for strategic awareness. James offers the counter-strategy: “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). This resistance begins with recognition—naming the competition for what it is and refusing to underestimate its tactical sophistication.

Victory isn’t achieved through ignorance of competitors but through allegiance to a far greater King.

Today’s Prayer: Lord of hosts, sharpen our spiritual discernment to recognize the strategic nature of what competes for our devotion. Amen.

Reflection Question: What competing influence in your life has been most effective at drawing your attention away from God?
