Time With Loved Ones

Proverbs 17:6 – “Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.“

The birthday cake glowed with candles as family gathered around the table—some present physically, others joining virtually from distances that geography imposed but technology bridged. Across generations, stories flowed freely, weaving together threads of shared history, inside jokes, and the unique personality of the father being celebrated. What made the occasion special wasn’t elaborate gifts or meticulously planned activities, but the simple, irreplaceable gift of presence.

In our efficiency-driven culture, time has become perhaps our most jealously guarded resource. We carefully allocate it to activities promising maximum return—career advancement, self-improvement, or entertainment. Yet something remarkable happens when we intentionally redirect this precious commodity toward those we love. The investment yields dividends that spreadsheets cannot calculate.

The wisdom literature of Scripture repeatedly emphasizes the value of intergenerational connection. Proverbs 17:6 beautifully captures this reciprocal relationship, where grandchildren crown their grandparents with dignity while parents become their children’s pride. These connections aren’t incidental to God’s design but central to it.

Moses instructed the Israelites to discuss God’s commands with their children during everyday moments—sitting at home, walking along the road, lying down, and getting up (Deuteronomy 6:7). This instruction reveals that spiritual formation happens not primarily through formal teaching but through life shared together.

Birthday celebrations, holiday gatherings, and ordinary Tuesday dinners all offer sacred opportunities to strengthen bonds that give life meaning and context. These moments allow wisdom to flow downward to younger generations and fresh perspective to flow upward to older ones. Each gathering becomes a small but significant investment in what ultimately matters most.

The greatest gift we can offer loved ones isn’t found in wrapping paper but in our willingness to be fully present.

Today’s Prayer: Father, thank You for the gift of relationships and the special people You’ve placed in our lives. Help us create memories that strengthen bonds and pass faith through generations. Amen.

Reflection Question: What specific person in your life needs the gift of your undivided attention right now?
