Looking Across The Water
Deuteronomy 8:7-8 – “For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey.“
Standing on the hotel balcony, gazing across Boston Harbor, the water stretches toward distant shores barely visible on the horizon. The morning sun creates a shimmering path across the surface, drawing the eye forward to what lies beyond. Something about a waterfront view naturally evokes contemplation about what awaits on the opposite shore.
This perspective mirrors a spiritual reality found throughout Scripture. From Moses viewing the Promised Land from Mount Nebo to John’s vision of the New Jerusalem, the Bible often positions God’s people on one shore, looking toward another where fuller promises await. This imagery inspired the classic hymn where the writer stands on “Jordan’s stormy banks” casting a “wishful eye” toward Canaan’s “fair and happy land.”
Water boundaries in Scripture consistently represent thresholds between our current reality and God’s fuller blessing. The Israelites crossed the Red Sea from slavery to freedom and later crossed the Jordan from wilderness wandering to promised inheritance. Even Jesus began His ministry by passing through the waters of baptism.
The harbor view invites a posture of anticipation. While we appreciate the beauty and provision of our current shore, we recognize it isn’t our final destination. As Hebrews 11:16 explains, those who live by faith “are longing for a better country—a heavenly one.”
This perspective transforms daily life. Rather than seeing our current circumstances as the totality of God’s provision, we recognize them as foretastes of greater fulfillment to come. Every blessing becomes both gift and pointer—provision for today and promise of tomorrow.
Sometimes we need to stand at water’s edge, gazing toward distant shores, to reorient our hearts toward home.
Today’s Prayer: Gracious God, help us live as pilgrims on a journey, grateful for current blessings while keeping our eyes fixed on the better country You have prepared. Amen.
Reflection Question: What “distant shore” in your spiritual journey are you currently looking toward with anticipation?
