In The Master’s Hand
Revelation 4:11 – “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.“
In Myra Brooks Welch’s beloved poem “The Touch of the Master’s Hand,” an old violin sits on an auction block, considered nearly worthless by the crowd. The auctioneer struggles to get even a few dollars for the battered instrument. Then something remarkable happens—a gray-haired man steps forward, wipes the dust from the violin, tightens its strings, and begins to play. Under his skilled hands, the instrument produces music so beautiful it moves the audience to tears. Suddenly, the bidding escalates dramatically, with the violin ultimately selling for thousands. The difference? The touch of the master’s hand.
This simple yet powerful imagery captures a fundamental spiritual truth. Like that violin, our lives may appear scarred, damaged, or of little value when assessed by worldly standards. We may even view ourselves as unworthy or beyond repair. Yet in the hands of the Master, our true value emerges.
Scripture consistently affirms this principle. In Isaiah 64:8, the prophet acknowledges, “Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.” The Psalmist declares, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). Paul reminds the Ephesians that “we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works” (Ephesians 2:10).
Our value doesn’t fluctuate based on public opinion, personal achievement, or past mistakes. Our worth is established by the Creator who formed us and the Redeemer who purchased us at immeasurable cost. When we place ourselves in God’s hands—surrendering to His purpose and yielding to His transformative touch—we discover our authentic identity and potential.
The world may assign value based on appearance, performance, or utility. But God sees the beautiful music waiting to be released in each life surrendered to His skilled and loving hands.
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, take my life into Your skilled hands today. Transform what seems broken into something beautiful. May the music of my life honor You. Amen.
Reflection Question: In what area of your life do you most need to experience “the touch of the Master’s hand” right now?
