He’s Only A Prayer Away
Matthew 8:24-26 – “Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, ‘Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!’ He replied, ‘You of little faith, why are you so afraid?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.”
The scene unfolds dramatically on the Sea of Galilee. Professional fishermen—men intimately familiar with these waters—find themselves overwhelmed by a sudden, violent storm. Waves crash over the sides, threatening to sink their vessel. Death seems imminent. In desperation, they shake awake their sleeping Teacher with an urgent plea: “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
What happens next defies natural explanation. With simple authority, Jesus stands and speaks to wind and water. Creation itself responds to its Creator’s voice, and “there was a great calm.” The disciples stand amazed, whispering to one another, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and waves obey him!”
This powerful moment reveals a profound spiritual principle: the presence of Jesus doesn’t guarantee absence of storms, but it does guarantee we won’t face them alone. The disciples had Jesus physically with them yet still experienced legitimate danger. However, one word from Him completely transformed their situation.
Like these frightened followers, we often find ourselves in circumstances that overwhelm our resources and experience. Perhaps it’s a health crisis that defies medical solution, a relationship fracturing beyond human repair, or financial pressures with no visible way forward. These storms threaten to sink us, and we cry out, wondering if God hears or cares.
The gospel reminds us that Jesus is never truly “asleep” to our needs. When we call on Him—even in panic or fear—He responds with power that transcends natural possibilities. The same authority that silenced ancient winds and waves still operates today when we invite divine intervention.
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this miracle is its accessibility. We need not cross oceans to find this storm-calming Savior. As Shirley Caesar’s song reminds believers, He’s only a prayer away.
Today’s Prayer: Lord Jesus, when life’s storms overwhelm me, help me remember Your power over every situation. Thank You that You’re only a prayer away, ready to respond when I call. Amen.
Reflection Question: When have you experienced a “storm” in your life that seemed beyond your control?
