When The War Is Over
2 Timothy 4:7-8 – “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”
The soldier’s duffel bag sits packed by the barracks door, ready for the moment orders finally come through. After months of deployment—sleepless nights on watch, the constant tension of patrol, the weight of combat gear in scorching heat—one word keeps hope alive through every mission: Home. Not the abstract concept, but the specific address where people wait who know his name, where his favorite chair sits empty, where life doesn’t require constant vigilance.
Paul understood this warrior’s longing. He described the Christian life as a fight, a race, a battle requiring full engagement. Like a soldier in sustained combat, he endured persecution, hardship, and countless spiritual battles. Yet through it all, he kept his eyes fixed on home—that glorious moment when faith becomes sight.
The battles we face may not involve physical weapons, but they’re no less real. We wrestle against despair, doubt, and temptation. We fight through illness, loss, and heartbreak. We stand against an enemy who seeks to destroy our faith and steal our hope. Some days, the combat feels endless.
But Scripture promises this war has an expiration date. Jesus already won the decisive victory at Calvary, and one day He will call His battle-weary soldiers home. No more skirmishes with sin. No more wounds from the enemy. Just the sweet relief of finally laying down our weapons at our Commander’s feet.
Until then, we fight on—not uncertain of victory but serving a risen King.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, sustain me through today’s battles and remind me that You’ve already secured the victory. Amen.
Reflection Question: Which current battle in your life requires you to focus more on the promised victory than the present struggle?
