The Power Of A Symbol

1 Corinthians 1:18– “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

The marketing team presents their final logo design to the CEO. Months of research, testing, and refinement have distilled the company’s entire mission into a simple image—shapes and colors that speak without words. A successful symbol conveys identity, values, and promises in a single glance. But long before modern branding, humanity has used symbols to represent truths too large for words alone.

For Christians, one symbol stands above all others: the cross.

What makes this symbol so powerful? Consider its paradoxical nature. The cross represents both the height of human cruelty and the depth of divine love. It signifies both death and life, judgment and mercy, weakness and power, shame and glory—all in a simple intersection of two wooden beams.

The apostle Paul recognized the cross’s strange power, acknowledging that it appeared as “foolishness” to the wisdom-seeking Greeks and a “stumbling block” to the sign-seeking Jews. In the Roman world, the cross was an instrument of humiliation and torturous death, reserved for the lowest criminals. To claim this symbol as central to faith seemed absurd.

Yet this apparent foolishness reveals God’s wisdom. In embracing the cross as our primary symbol, we declare that redemption comes not through human strength but divine weakness, not through conquering but through sacrifice, not through imposition but through submission.

What other symbol could so perfectly capture Christianity’s revolutionary message? The empty tomb speaks of victory, but the cross reminds us of the cost. The fish represented secret fellowship, but the cross boldly declares public identification. The dove suggests peace, but the cross shows the price of that peace.

Today’s Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for transforming an instrument of death into the symbol of eternal life. Amen.

Reflection Question: How has the symbol of the cross transformed how you life your life?
