The Voice Of The Ungodly
John 11:51-52 – “He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.”
The criticism stings because of its source—your most skeptical coworker, the one who rolls his eyes at any mention of faith. Yet his observation about your recent behavior hits uncomfortably close to home. You’ve been cutting corners, justifying small compromises, rationalizing decisions you know aren’t quite right. And here comes truth you didn’t want to hear from someone you never expected to deliver it.
God has a history of using unexpected messengers. Balaam, a pagan prophet hired to curse Israel, found himself blessing them instead. King Cyrus, who didn’t acknowledge Israel’s God, became the instrument of their restoration. Even Caiaphas, plotting Jesus’ death, unwittingly prophesied the redemptive purpose of Christ’s sacrifice. God isn’t limited by the moral character of His messengers.
Consider Joseph in Egypt. His path to saving his family began with his brothers’ cruel betrayal. Their jealousy became the first link in a chain leading to preservation rather than destruction. Years later, Joseph recognized the divine orchestration: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good” (Genesis 50:20).
Even persecution that scattered the early church served to spread the gospel beyond Jerusalem. “Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went” (Acts 8:4). What opponents meant for harm became the catalyst for exponential growth.
This doesn’t mean God approves of ungodly behavior or that such voices carry Scripture’s authority. Rather, His sovereignty isn’t confined by human limitations. He can redirect any circumstance—even opposition, criticism, or betrayal—to accomplish His purposes. The spiritually attentive believer learns to perceive God’s directing hand even in the most unlikely messages.
Today’s Prayer: Father, sharpen my discernment to recognize Your guidance even through unexpected sources. Amen.
Reflection Question: When has God used an unlikely person or circumstance to redirect your path?
