Advertising The Sale
Isaiah 55:1-2 – Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Bold red letters plaster the storefront windows in Codman Square: “EVERYTHING MUST GO!” “PRICES SLASHED!” “FINAL DAYS!” The furniture store shouts its promises to anyone passing by, creating manufactured urgency designed to stop traffic and open wallets. But you barely slow down. After years of “going out of business sales” that never quite go out of business, the signs have lost their power to convince.
Scripture reveals that God also advertises. Isaiah’s prophetic voice rings out like a street vendor: “Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost!” Jesus continued the campaign: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). The final pages of Revelation conclude with the same appeal: “The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!'” (Revelation 22:17).
Yet we’ve grown so accustomed to inflated promises that we walk past God’s genuine invitation with the same skepticism we reserve for clearance sales. We’ve heard too many claims that didn’t deliver, seen too many offers that disappointed. So when God advertises grace freely given, mercy without cost, and rest for the weary, we assume there must be hidden terms, fine print, or catches we haven’t discovered yet.
But God’s advertising differs from every storefront promise in one critical way: it understates rather than exaggerates. The furniture will break, the bargains will disappoint, the “deals of a lifetime” will prove ordinary. God’s offer, however, delivers infinitely more than even His boldest promises suggest. His grace proves deeper, His mercy extends further, and His faithfulness reaches beyond anything we could ask or imagine.
Today’s Prayer: Father, soften my cynicism toward Your genuine invitations and help me respond with trust. Amen.
Reflection Question: What invitation from God have you been ignoring because it seemed too good to be true?
