Realign The Printer

Psalm 51:10-12 – “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”

The message flashes on the printer display: “Alignment needed.” You’ve just replaced the ink cartridges, snapped them into place with satisfying clicks. But before the printer will produce anything useful, it demands calibration. A test page prints—precise patterns of lines and colors that allow the machine to adjust itself. Without this recalibration, even the freshest ink cannot produce crisp text or properly aligned images. The filling alone isn’t enough.

We experience something similar in our spiritual lives. A powerful worship service leaves us filled with fresh vision. A retreat renews our sense of purpose. A season of prayer brings clarity we haven’t felt in years. Yet within days or weeks, we find ourselves frustrated—the expected transformation hasn’t materialized. We’re filled but not functioning as we anticipated.

The problem isn’t the filling; it’s the missing calibration. Psalm 51 captures this need perfectly. David doesn’t just ask God to forgive—he pleads for comprehensive recalibration: “Create in me a pure heart… renew a steadfast spirit… restore the joy of your salvation.” Spiritual renewal requires more than a fresh start. It demands realignment of priorities, relationships, time, and understanding.

The disciples discovered this after Pentecost. The Spirit’s power filled them, but they still needed time to recalibrate their understanding of God’s mission, adjust their relationships with one another, and reimagine their place in the world.

When God fills us afresh, we must allow that filling to realign what needs adjusting. Otherwise, like a printer with new ink but poor alignment, we remain technically functional but produce work that lacks the clarity and beauty God intends.

Today’s Prayer: Holy Spirit, show me what needs realignment so Your work through me can be clear and beautiful. Amen.

Reflection Question: What specific area of your life is God prompting you to realign?
