Peace Be Still
Mark 4:39 – “And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”
The scene unfolds with vivid detail—a furious squall on the Sea of Galilee, waves breaking over the boat, water rising dangerously. Experienced fishermen, men who knew this lake intimately, had reached the edge of panic. Meanwhile, in the stern, Jesus slept peacefully on a cushion, seemingly unconcerned by the storm threatening their lives.
What happens next reveals something extraordinary. Jesus doesn’t frantically bail water or help secure the sails. He simply stands, addresses the elements directly, and speaks three words: “Peace! Be still!” Nature instantly recognizes the voice of its Creator. The howling wind falls silent. Churning waves flatten to glass. Supernatural calm descends over the water.
This wasn’t merely a demonstration of power but a revelation of authority. Unlike human commands that require enforcement, God’s words contain inherent creative and transformative power. When God says “peace,” peace happens—not as a goal to work toward but as an immediate outcome established by His Word.
God said, “Let there be light,” and light instantly existed. Jesus said to Lazarus, “Come out,” and death immediately released its grip. This same voice speaks into our storms today, not with suggestions but with authority. When Jesus declares “peace” over areas of our lives—relationships, health concerns, financial worries, emotional turmoil—His words carry the same power that calmed Galilee.
The disciples’ question following this miracle remains relevant: “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (Mark 4:41). If the elements of nature instantly obey His voice, we can trust that every aspect of our circumstances—even those that seem most chaotic and threatening—ultimately falls under His authority.
Today’s Prayer: Lord Jesus, speak Your peace into the storms of my life and help me trust Your authority. Amen.
Reflection Question: What storm in your life needs to hear Jesus’ authoritative “Peace! Be still!”?
