Feel Like I’m Being Watched

Proverbs 15:3 – “The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.”

That peculiar sensation crawls up your spine—the unmistakable feeling of being observed. You glance around but see no obvious observer. Yet the impression persists, that awareness of another’s gaze fixed upon you. This common human experience, so powerful it can alter behavior without visual confirmation, points toward a spiritual truth far more significant.

Scripture repeatedly emphasizes God’s continuous, attentive gaze upon human affairs. David marveled at this divine awareness: “You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways” (Psalm 139:2-3). Nothing escapes the notice of the One who “searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought” (1 Chronicles 28:9).

This divine watchfulness provokes different responses. For those living in rebellion, it represents uncomfortable scrutiny. Jonah discovered the futility of attempting to flee from God’s presence. For those walking in fellowship with God, however, this same awareness becomes comforting protection. “The eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him” (2 Chronicles 16:9).

The challenge is developing what the Puritans called “practicing the presence of God”—cultivating awareness of divine observation not as occasional insight but as continuous consciousness. Imagine how differently we might speak if we maintained awareness of divine eavesdropping. Consider how our private behaviors might change if God’s witnessing presence remained at the forefront of our thoughts. That spine-tingling sense of being watched isn’t paranoia—it’s reality. And recognizing it changes everything.

Today’s Prayer: Father, sharpen my awareness of Your constant presence and help me live with integrity. Amen.

Reflection Question: What would change in your life if you lived more aware of God’s constant presence?
