I Must Tell Jesus

Psalm 55:22 – “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.”

The old hymn’s opening line cuts straight to the heart: “I must tell Jesus all of my trials; I cannot bear these burdens alone.” In these simple words lies both a confession of human limitation and a declaration of divine sufficiency. We are not designed to carry life’s heaviest weights without assistance.

Our instinct, however, often leads us elsewhere. We tell our troubles to friends who can offer sympathy but not solutions. We share our burdens with family who provide support but lack divine power. We confide in counselors who bring insight but not supernatural intervention. While these relationships have their place, they ultimately fall short of what our souls most deeply need.

David understood this when he wrote, “Cast your burden on the Lord.” The Hebrew word for “cast” suggests not a polite transfer but a forceful throwing—the deliberate releasing of a weight too heavy to bear. It’s the action of someone who has reached the limit of their strength and must let go.

Even Jesus, facing the immense pressure of His impending sacrifice, went to Gethsemane to pour out His heart to the Father. If the Son of God found it necessary to transfer His heaviest burdens through prayer, how much more do we need this divine unburdening?

The promise is equally powerful: “He will sustain you.” The word carries the idea of containing, comprehending, maintaining. God takes what we release and simultaneously holds us steady through the process. The hymn writer had it right. We must tell Jesus—not because He doesn’t already know, but because bearing these burdens alone was never the design.

Today’s Prayer: Lord Jesus, I cast upon You what I cannot carry alone. Amen.

Reflection Question: What specific burden are you attempting to carry alone that needs to be cast upon the Lord?
