Playing The Lottery

Matthew 16:25-26 – “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”

When you stand in line at the 7-Eleven, you will often see a stream of customers approach the counter. Very frequently many have come to hand over their hard-earned money for lottery tickets. Some study their tickets carefully; others tuck them away casually. Most will never see a return on their investment. Yet they pay willingly, believing the potential reward justifies the expense.

The scene provides a parallel to the Christian life. Jesus never disguised the cost of following Him. “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). Discipleship has a price—comfort sacrificed, pride surrendered, priorities rearranged. Following Christ has never been the easy path.

Yet unlike lottery players facing slim odds, Christians invest in a certainty. Paul declared, “I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:8). The lottery tempts with the possibility of temporary riches, but Christ promises the guarantee of eternal treasure.

Consider the contrast: Lottery players risk a little for an unlikely chance at gaining much. Christians surrender much for the absolute promise of gaining everything. The lottery offers one unlikely winner amid millions of losers. Christ offers victory to everyone who comes to Him in faith.

Those lottery ticket buyers weren’t foolish for understanding investment—sometimes you must give up something now to gain something greater later. Their mistake was in where they placed their hope. They bet on chance; we trust in certainty.

Each time we choose obedience over convenience, forgiveness over resentment, or integrity over compromise, we’re placing our bet on Christ’s promises.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, thank You that following You isn’t a gamble but an investment in certainty. Help me count the cost of discipleship joyfully. Amen.

Reflection Question: What are you currently holding back from God, fearing the cost might be too high?
