Love Is Not Dependent On Worthiness

Romans 5:8 – “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

The employee handbook sat open on the desk, its performance review criteria laid out in precise detail. Points awarded for exceeding expectations. Points deducted for missed deadlines. A numerical score determining raises, promotions, recognition. Everything measured, everything earned. Merit-based systems make sense in the workplace—you get what you deserve based on what you produce.

That same logic creeps into how we think about love. We assume affection must be earned through good behavior, loyalty proven through consistency, acceptance won through meeting standards. When others disappoint us, we withdraw our love as though it were a reward they no longer deserve. When we fail ourselves, we assume God’s love must similarly fluctuate based on our spiritual performance scorecard.

Yet God’s love operates by an entirely different principle. The cross stands as history’s most powerful statement that divine love has nothing to do with the recipient’s worthiness. Paul emphasizes this in Romans 5:8—Christ died for us “while we were still sinners.” Not after we cleaned up our act. Not once we started trying harder. Not when we finally became deserving. But precisely when we were most undeserving.

This is the scandalous nature of grace. God doesn’t love us because we’re worthy; we’re worthy because God loves us. Our value comes from His choice to cherish us despite complete awareness of our flaws.

When we truly grasp this reality, it transforms how we love others. If God’s love for us isn’t based on our worthiness, how can we make our love for others dependent on theirs? Jesus challenged His followers: “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them” (Luke 6:32).

This kind of love flows from experiencing God’s own unmerited love for us.

Today’s Prayer: Father, help me love others based on Your love for them rather than my assessment of their worthiness. Amen.

Reflection Question: Who in your life are you withholding love from because you’ve deemed them unworthy of it?
