Shortcuts
Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
The familiar side street promised relief from the gridlocked main road. After all, this shortcut had saved precious minutes countless times before. But today, brake lights stretched ahead as far as the eye could see. Construction had forced traffic onto this normally quiet route, creating an even worse bottleneck than the highway. What should have been a time-saver became a frustrating delay, and the “long way” would have actually been faster.
This experience mirrors a common spiritual tendency. When God’s path seems slow or difficult, we often scout for shortcuts. We rationalize compromises that promise quicker results. We skip steps in character development, hoping to fast-track our way to spiritual maturity. We choose the easier conversation over the harder truth, the comfortable lie over the challenging reality.
The Israelites faced this temptation when they built the golden calf while Moses was on Mount Sinai (Exodus 32). Waiting for God’s timing felt too long, so they created their own solution. Their shortcut led to devastating consequences that affected generations.
God’s ways aren’t always the fastest from our perspective, but they’re always the best. His routes include necessary preparation, character building, and protection we can’t see. When we trust His timing and follow His direction, even when it seems longer, we discover that His path was actually the most efficient route to where we truly need to be.
The scenic route often provides the best journey, and God’s way is never a detour—it’s the destination.
Today’s Prayer: Father, help me resist the temptation to find shortcuts around Your plan for my life. Give me patience to trust Your timing and wisdom to follow Your path. Amen.
