The Detour
Proverbs 16:9 – “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.”
The road closure sign appeared without warning, forcing traffic onto an unfamiliar route through side streets and residential neighborhoods. What should have been a straightforward ten-minute drive became a winding twenty-minute journey through areas never traveled before. Frustration mounted with each unexpected turn, until the detour finally reconnected with the original road just past the construction zone.
Life’s detours rarely announce themselves as clearly as orange signs and traffic cones. A job loss forces a career change. An illness derails carefully laid plans. A relationship ends unexpectedly. A move to a new city disrupts established routines. These unwanted redirections can feel like divine mistakes, as though God lost track of our intended destination.
But Scripture reveals a different perspective. Solomon acknowledged that while we make our plans, God ultimately directs our steps. What appears to us as a frustrating detour may actually be God’s preferred route, protecting us from dangers we cannot see or preparing us for opportunities we haven’t yet imagined.
Joseph spent years in what seemed like an endless detour—slavery and imprisonment when he should have been living his dreams. Yet that unexpected route positioned him to save nations from famine. The Israelites wandered forty years in what could have been an eleven-day journey, but the wilderness prepared them for what the Promised Land required.
Sometimes the detour is the destination, teaching us what the straight path never could. Our preference for the original route matters less than trusting the One who sees the whole map.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me patience to follow where You lead, even when the route doesn’t make sense from my limited perspective. Amen.
Reflection Question: What current “detour” in your life might actually be God’s intended path rather than a mistake?
