Crucified With Christ

Luke 9:23 – “Then he said to them all: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.'”

When Jesus spoke about taking up our cross, His listeners understood exactly what He meant. They had witnessed Roman crucifixions—brutal public executions where condemned criminals carried their own crossbeams to the place of death. The cross wasn’t a piece of jewelry or a decorative symbol; it was an instrument of sacrifice and suffering.

But here’s what makes Christ’s call revolutionary: He didn’t carry His cross for Himself. Every step toward Calvary was motivated by love for others. His sacrifice wasn’t about His own benefit but about our redemption. The cross He bore was weighted with humanity’s sin and brokenness, not His own.

When Jesus calls us to take up our cross daily, He’s inviting us into the same others-centered sacrifice. Our cross isn’t about enduring personal hardships or accepting life’s difficulties with resignation. It’s about willingly choosing sacrifice for the benefit of others, even when it costs us something valuable.

This might mean staying late to help a struggling coworker instead of rushing home. It could involve using vacation time to care for an aging parent rather than taking that dream trip. Sometimes it means having difficult conversations that preserve relationships rather than avoiding conflict for our own comfort.

Paul understood this calling: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). He discovered that dying to self-interest opens space for Christ’s love to flow through us to others.

The cross we carry isn’t about our suffering—it’s about others’ healing.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me understand what it means to take up my cross daily. Give me strength to follow Your example of selfless love. Amen.

Reflection Question: What specific sacrifice is God asking you to make for someone else’s benefit?
