Where Are You

Luke 22:33-34 – “But he replied, ‘Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.'”

The GPS voice was confident: “Turn right in 500 feet.” But something felt wrong. The suggested route led toward a dead-end street that couldn’t possibly connect to the destination. A quick check revealed the problem—the device had lost satellite signal and was showing an incorrect location. Without knowing where it actually was, the GPS couldn’t provide accurate directions.

This technology illustrates a fundamental principle of navigation: you can’t get where you’re going until you know where you are. The most sophisticated mapping system becomes useless without an accurate starting point.

Peter learned this lesson in the most painful way possible. In the Upper Room, he boldly declared his loyalty to Jesus, promising to follow Him anywhere, even to prison and death. His intentions were sincere, his commitment heartfelt. But Jesus saw what Peter couldn’t—the gap between his aspirations and his current spiritual maturity.

Christ’s prediction of Peter’s denial wasn’t cruel; it was diagnostic. Like a spiritual GPS recalibrating, Jesus was helping Peter understand his true location. Before Peter could become the bold preacher of Pentecost, he needed to honestly face the frightened man he was that night.

After his failure, Peter didn’t disappear in shame. Instead, he allowed Jesus to restore him by the lakeside (John 21), acknowledging his love while accepting his limitations. This honest assessment became the foundation for his transformation.

God often uses our failures similarly—not to condemn us, but to help us see clearly where we are so He can navigate us to where we need to be.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me be honest about where I am spiritually right now. Don’t allow my pride or fear prevent me from seeing clearly. Amen.
