The Instruction Manual
2 Timothy 3:16 – “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”
The furniture sat partially assembled in the middle of the room, a confusing array of pieces, screws, and tools scattered around it. An hour of frustrated trial and error had produced a wobbly structure that didn’t look anything like the picture on the box. Finally, in desperation, the crumpled instruction manual was retrieved from the trash. Within twenty minutes, following the step-by-step directions, the piece stood complete and stable.
This familiar scenario illustrates how many people approach life. We attempt to assemble meaningful existence through trial and error, cultural assumptions, and well-intentioned guesses. When things don’t work as expected—relationships fail, decisions backfire, life feels unstable—we wonder why the picture on the box doesn’t match our reality.
Meanwhile, God has provided an instruction manual. Not suggestions or helpful hints, but divine guidance for how life is designed to function. Paul told Timothy that Scripture is “useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness”—covering everything from initial assembly to ongoing maintenance.
Yet the Bible often gets the same treatment as that furniture manual: ignored until crisis hits, skimmed rather than studied, or set aside when its instructions seem inconvenient. We prefer our own methods until they fail, then wonder why God hasn’t blessed our self-designed approach.
The instruction manual doesn’t make assembly effortless, but it makes success possible. Following its guidance doesn’t eliminate all challenges, but it prevents unnecessary complications caused by ignoring the Designer’s intent.
Have we provided instructions? Yes. Will we follow them?
Today’s Prayer: Lord, forgive me for treating Your Word like an optional reference instead of essential instruction. Help me approach Scripture with humility, even when it challenges my preferences. Amen.
Reflection Question: In what area of your life have you been trying to “assemble” things your own way instead of consulting God’s instructions?
