The Fallout Shelter

Proverbs 18:10 – “The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”

During the Cold War, fallout shelters were tucked beneath schools, office buildings, and government facilities across the country. The signs were unmistakable — black and yellow, mounted in stairwells and posted at building entrances, pointing people toward designated safe areas. Civil defense officials spent years identifying locations, stockpiling supplies, and making sure the infrastructure was in place long before any emergency materialized. Everyone understood the basic arrangement — if the sirens sounded, you didn’t stand outside debating your options. You ran.

What’s worth noticing is that nobody questioned the accommodations. Concrete walls, folding cots, stored rations, and fluorescent lighting weren’t anyone’s idea of comfort. But comfort was never the point. The point was survival, and when the threat was real, everything else faded in importance except getting inside and getting there fast.

There’s something in that picture that speaks directly to how many of us handle crisis. When life becomes overwhelming — when anxiety, grief, temptation, or confusion close in — the instinct for a lot of people is to manage the situation first and pray about it later. We exhaust our own resources, wear ourselves down working the problem, and treat God as a last resort rather than a first response.

Psalm 46:1 describes God as a very present help in trouble — not an eventual help, not a backup plan, but a present one. The shelter isn’t something you build after the sirens start. It’s something you know before they do.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, when the pressures of life close in, let my first instinct be to run to You. You are my strong tower, and I don’t want to face anything without You. Amen.

Reflection Question: When trouble comes, what is usually your first response?
