The Dead End Sign
Proverbs 14:12 – “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.”
Most neighborhoods have at least one. A street that looks completely normal from the entrance — houses lined up on both sides, maybe a few trees, cars parked along the curb — but ends abruptly at a barrier or a cul-de-sac with nowhere left to go. The dead end sign is posted right at the turn-in, not hidden around a corner or buried behind overgrowth. It’s visible, it’s clear, and it’s there for one reason — so that anyone who reads it knows before they commit to the street that it isn’t going to take them anywhere.
The frustrating thing is that some people see the sign and turn in anyway. Maybe they think their GPS knows something the sign doesn’t. Maybe they’re convinced their situation is the exception. Whatever the reasoning, the outcome is always the same — eventually they have to stop, turn around, and come back out the way they came in, having spent time and energy on a road that was never going to deliver what they were looking for.
God posts dead end signs too. Sometimes it’s a door that simply will not open no matter how persistently you push. Sometimes it’s a quiet unease in your spirit that lingers long after the excitement of an opportunity has worn off. Sometimes it’s the same painful consequence showing up repeatedly at the end of the same kind of decision. The signs don’t always look the same, but the message is consistent — this road doesn’t lead where you think it does.
Proverbs 16:25 echoes the same warning, reminding us that what feels right to us and what is right aren’t always the same thing. God’s redirections aren’t arbitrary. He can see the full length of every street from where He stands, and He’d rather post the sign at the entrance than watch us hit the wall at the end.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me the humility to recognize the dead ends You’ve marked in my life. Help me trust Your redirections even when the road looks promising. Amen.
Reflection Question: Is there a situation in your life right now where God may be posting a dead end sign?
