Food Outside The City
2 Kings 7:5-6 – “So they came to the edge of the camp, and behold, there was no one there. For the Lord had caused the army of the Syrians to hear the sound of chariots and the sound of a great army…and they fled for their lives.”
Four lepers were sitting at the gate of Samaria in the worst possible situation. The city behind them was under siege, gripped by a famine so severe that people were paying outrageous prices for scraps of food just to survive. They couldn’t go back inside — their condition made them outcasts. They couldn’t stay where they were — they would eventually starve. So they made a decision born not out of faith but out of desperation. They would walk toward the Syrian camp, surrender themselves, and take whatever came next. In their own words, “Why do we sit here until we die?”
What they found when they arrived was something none of them could have anticipated. The camp was completely abandoned. Tents were still standing. Food and supplies were left exactly where they had been. The entire Syrian army had fled in panic, driven away by the sound of a great army that only God had produced. The provision was already there. The enemy was already gone. Nobody inside the city knew it yet because nobody had been willing to move in that direction.
There is something in that story worth sitting with. The breakthrough wasn’t inside the city walls where everyone was waiting and hoping. It was outside — in the very place that looked the most dangerous and the least promising.
Sometimes God’s provision is waiting in the direction that frightens us most. The lepers didn’t have great faith. They had no other options. But their willingness to move toward the uncomfortable place is what put them in position to discover what God had already done.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me the courage to move toward the places that seem unlikely and uncomfortable. Remind me that You often place provision where I least expect it. Amen.
Reflection Question: Is there a direction in your life that God may be calling you toward that you’ve been avoiding because it looks too uncertain or too risky?
