Crack In The Windshield

Song of Solomon 2:15 – “Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, for our vineyards are in bloom.”

It usually starts with something so small you almost don’t notice it. A tiny chip in the lower corner of the windshield — barely visible, easy to overlook, not affecting your ability to drive. So you make a mental note to deal with it eventually and keep moving. Days pass, then weeks. The temperature drops overnight and climbs again by afternoon. The glass expands and contracts, and that small chip quietly begins to travel. By the time you think about it again, there’s a crack running halfway across your field of vision. What could have been fixed in a parking lot with a ten-dollar repair kit now requires a full windshield replacement.

The most frustrating part isn’t the cost. It’s knowing that the window of easy intervention came and went while you were busy with everything else.

Most people have experienced this principle somewhere in their lives well beyond automotive glass. A small offense left unaddressed becomes a hardened resentment. A minor financial habit left unchecked becomes a significant debt. A pattern of compromise that seemed insignificant at first slowly reshapes a person’s character in ways they never intended. The crack was always there — small, manageable, easy to fix early. The damage comes from the delay.

Hebrews 12:15 warns about a root of bitterness that starts small and eventually causes widespread trouble, defiling many. The imagery is precise — roots don’t announce themselves. They grow quietly underground until the evidence shows up somewhere you weren’t expecting it.

Addressing something small requires humility. It means admitting there’s a problem before the problem becomes undeniable. But that’s always the easier repair.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me the honesty to recognize small cracks before they spread, and the discipline to address them while they’re still manageable. Amen.

Reflection Question: Is there a small issue in your life that you’ve been putting off addressing?
