Pointed In The Right Direction
Isaiah 30:21 – “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.'”
Driving past a house recently, a satellite dish mounted on the exterior caught your attention — not because it was unusual, but because of something specific about the way it was positioned. It wasn’t just bolted to the wall and left wherever it landed. It was angled with precision, pointed in a very deliberate direction. That dish was aimed at something specific thousands of miles above the earth, and even a few degrees off would mean a degraded signal or no signal at all. The position isn’t decorative. It’s functional. Everything depends on it.
What’s interesting is that the satellite never moves toward the dish. The signal is already being transmitted. The homeowner’s only responsibility is to make sure the receiver is properly aligned to pick it up.
That’s a picture worth sitting with. God is always communicating. His Word is already spoken, His Spirit is already active, His guidance is already in motion. The variable isn’t whether He is transmitting — it’s whether we are positioned to receive. A life cluttered with noise, distraction, and neglected spiritual disciplines is a dish that’s drifted off alignment. The signal hasn’t stopped. The receiver has just shifted.
John 10:27 records Jesus saying that His sheep hear His voice. Not that they might hear it under the right circumstances, but that they hear it — as a characteristic of the relationship. That kind of receptivity doesn’t happen accidentally. It requires intentional positioning, the daily discipline of prayer, Scripture, and silence that keeps us aimed in the right direction.
The satellite is up there transmitting whether the dish is aligned or not. The only question is whether we’re pointed toward it.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, show me where I have drifted off alignment. Help me build the daily habits that keep me pointed in Your direction. Amen.
Reflection Question: What distractions or neglected spiritual habits have caused you to drift off alignment?
