Pulled Onto The Curb
Proverbs 27:17 – “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
Two joggers stood at the crosswalk waiting for the light. When it changed, one of them stepped off the curb without hesitation — light’s green, time to move. What they didn’t see was the car that had no intention of stopping, blowing through the intersection at full speed. Their friend saw it instantly, grabbed them by the arm, and yanked them back onto the curb before they ever knew what nearly happened.
For a moment, the jogger probably didn’t even understand why they were being pulled back. The light had changed. It was their turn. Everything looked clear from where they were standing.
That’s precisely the point.
There are moments in life when we step off the curb completely convinced we have the right of way — a decision that looks sound from our angle, a relationship that seems fine from where we’re standing, a direction that appears clear based on everything we can see. What we don’t always have is the perspective of someone standing slightly behind us, watching from a different vantage point, who can see what’s coming before we do.
God is intentional about placing those people in our lives. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reminds us that two are better than one — specifically because when one falls, the other is there to help. That’s not accidental companionship. That’s divine architecture. The friend who asks the hard question, the mentor who slows you down when you’re moving too fast, the trusted voice that says something doesn’t feel right — these are people God has positioned on purpose.
Not everyone who pulls you back is being negative. Some of them are just standing where they can see the car coming.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, thank You for the people You have placed in my life who see what I cannot. Help me to receive their correction with humility rather than resistance. Amen.
Reflection Question: Is there someone in your life who has tried to pull you back from something? How have you been receiving their concern?
