Degrees On The Wall
Matthew 7:16 – “By their fruit you will recognize them.”
Sitting in the dentist’s chair, there’s usually a moment before the appointment begins where your eyes wander around the room. And inevitably they land on the wall — the framed degrees, the certifications, the licensing credentials mounted in a neat row. Nobody put them there by accident. They represent years of study, examinations passed, skills developed, and standards met. Every patient who walks through that door is extending trust based on what those credentials communicate. The dentist doesn’t have to explain his qualifications every visit. The wall speaks for him.
It’s a system that works well for professional life. But Christians don’t get to hang their spiritual development in a frame.
What we have instead is something more visible and harder to manufacture — the way we actually live. The patience that shows up under pressure. The integrity that holds when no one is watching. The generosity that operates even in tight seasons. The peace that remains stable when circumstances would justify panic. These aren’t things that can be printed on a certificate. They’re the product of years spent in Scripture, in prayer, in obedience, and in the kind of character refinement that only comes through walking closely with God over time.
Second Peter 1:5-8 lays out a progression — faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, love. That list isn’t describing a single moment of conversion. It’s describing a life under continuous development. The work shows up in how we live, how we treat people, and who we are when no one is evaluating us.
That’s the only wall that matters.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, let the work You have done in me show up clearly in how I live. May my life be the evidence of Your presence, not just my words. Amen.
Reflection Question: If the people closest to you had to describe your spiritual character based solely on how you live, what would they say?
