When God Speaks
James 1:22 – “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”
It was an ordinary Tuesday morning commute — traffic, coffee, the usual. A YouTube sermon was playing through the car speakers, more background than focal point at first. But somewhere between the on-ramp and the highway, something in the message landed with unusual weight. It wasn’t just interesting content anymore. It was a direct word for a specific situation, and it was impossible to treat it casually. By the next morning, action had already been taken — a conversation initiated, a decision made, something that had been sitting unaddressed finally moved on.
That’s the Word of God functioning exactly the way it was designed to.
Hebrews 4:12 describes Scripture as living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword. That language isn’t decorative — it’s describing something that cuts through the comfortable distance we often maintain between hearing truth and actually responding to it. The Word doesn’t just inform. When received with an open heart, it compels.
The pattern most of us have developed, however, is one of prolonged consideration. We hear something powerful, acknowledge that it applies to us, and then file it away for future reflection that never quite arrives. The conviction fades, the moment passes, and life continues unchanged. We become, as James describes, people who look in a mirror and walk away immediately forgetting what we look like.
The measure of whether God’s Word has truly reached us isn’t how moved we felt in the moment. It’s what we did the next morning.
Today’s Prayer:
Lord, when You speak, give me the courage to act quickly rather than have a delayed response. Let Your Word produce movement in my life, not just reflection. Amen.
Reflection Question:
Is there something God has already spoken to you about that you have been sitting on instead of acting on?
