A Father’s Sacrifice

John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

There is something in a good father that doesn’t calculate the cost when his children are involved. He works the extra hours without announcing it. He goes without so they don’t have to. He places himself between his children and whatever threatens them without stopping to weigh the personal expense. It isn’t heroics — it’s just what fathers do when the love is real. The sacrifice is so woven into the daily fabric of fatherhood that most children don’t fully grasp its scope until they’re grown, and sometimes not even then.

Father’s Day gives us a moment to slow down and recognize what is too easily taken for granted the other 364 days of the year.

But there is a Father whose sacrifice operates on a scale that no human father, however devoted, has ever matched or could match. Every earthly father who has ever gone without sleep, worked an extra shift, or stepped in front of danger for his child has reflected — without knowing it — something of the character of God. Those moments of paternal sacrifice are glimpses of a love that was willing to give not resources or comfort or convenience, but a Son.

Romans 8:32 frames it in a way that is almost difficult to absorb — if God did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also graciously give us everything else? The logic of that verse only holds if the original gift was the greatest possible sacrifice. And it was.

No father has ever given more than that.

Reflection Question:
How does the sacrifice of your Heavenly Father change the way you understand what love at its deepest level?
