Labels
Jeremiah 1:5 – “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.”
Standing in the grocery aisle, it’s worth noticing how completely dependent we are on labels. Pull a can off the shelf and peel away the paper wrapper, and what’s left is an unmarked metal cylinder that could be almost anything — vegetables, soup, fruit, beans. Without that printed label, there would be no reliable way to know what’s actually inside. You’d be guessing, shaking the can, maybe opening it just to find out. The label isn’t decoration. It’s information, and it’s accurate information, because the people who applied it are the same people who packed the contents at the factory. They didn’t have to guess what was inside. They put it there.
That distinction matters more than it first appears.
A stranger walking through that same grocery store couldn’t reliably label those cans either, no matter how confidently they tried. They weren’t there for the packing. They have no access to the actual contents — only assumptions based on the shape of the can or what they’ve heard about similar products. Yet people do exactly that to one another constantly. A label gets applied based on a single failure, a difficult season, a misunderstood comment, or someone else’s secondhand opinion, and suddenly that label sticks as though it were factually accurate. Lazy. Difficult. Not enough. Too much. Broken beyond repair.
The trouble is that none of those voices packed the can.
Jeremiah 1:5 carries an enormous claim — God knew the prophet before he was formed, before anyone else had the chance to form an opinion. Psalm 139:13 echoes the same truth, describing God as the one who knit each person together intricately, with full knowledge of every detail inside. He is the only one who was present at the packing, which makes Him the only one positioned to label accurately.
Other people’s labels are guesses. His is the only one based on actually knowing what’s inside.
Today’s Prayer:
Lord, remind me that You alone packed me, You alone know what’s truly inside me, and Your label is the only one that defines who I am. Amen.
Reflection Question:
What label has someone else placed on you that you’ve been carrying as though it were true?
