The Vines In The Hedges
1 Corinthians 16:13 – “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith.”
Cutting the hedges had become routine — same shears, same rhythm, trim the top, even out the sides, step back and check that the lines look clean. From a distance the hedges always looked fine. But this time, while reaching in deeper than usual, something unexpected surfaced. Thin vines had worked their way into the interior of the hedge, climbing up through the branches from underneath, completely hidden from the surface view that gets checked every week. They hadn’t appeared overnight. The thickness of some of those vines made it obvious they had been growing undisturbed for a long time, quietly using the hedge as a structure to climb while nobody noticed, because nobody was ever looking past what was visible on top.
That’s the part worth sitting with. The trimming had been happening regularly. The hedges always passed a casual inspection. But a casual inspection only ever evaluates the surface, and the surface is rarely where the real problem starts.
Spiritual life works the same way. It’s possible to maintain all the visible disciplines — showing up, looking composed, saying the right things — while something is quietly taking root underneath that never gets examined because the surface looks fine. Bitterness can grow in the interior of a life for years before it pokes through. So can compromise, resentment, or a slow erosion of conviction that doesn’t show on the outside until it’s substantial enough to be impossible to miss.
First Corinthians 16:13 calls for being on guard, which implies more than occasional maintenance. It implies regularly checking beneath what’s visible, because by the time a vine pushes through the surface, it has usually already been growing for a while.
The hedge looked fine. It just wasn’t fine underneath.
Today’s Prayer:
Lord, give me the discipline to examine what’s growing beneath the surface of my life, not just what others can see. Amen.
Reflection Question:
What might be growing beneath the surface of your life right now that you haven’t noticed because you’ve only been checking what’s visible on top?
