Intense Heat

Matthew 11:28 – “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

A serious heat wave does not announce itself with drama. It just settles in. Day after day the temperature climbs past the point of discomfort and stays there, and after a while something begins to happen to a person that goes beyond just feeling warm. The motivation drains out. Tasks that would normally take an hour stretch into the afternoon. The walk to the corner that never bothered anyone suddenly requires a conversation with yourself before you attempt it. Even thinking feels heavier than usual.

It is not laziness. The body under prolonged, intense heat is genuinely working harder just to maintain itself. Cooling down becomes a full time occupation, and everything else gets rationed. People who are normally productive find themselves doing the bare minimum and feeling vaguely guilty about it, not realizing that the heat itself has changed the conditions under which everything is being attempted.

There are spiritual conditions that work exactly the same way. Prolonged discouragement, unresolved grief, chronic isolation, or a season of unanswered prayer can settle over a person the way a heat wave settles over a city. The desire to pray is still there somewhere, but it feels far off. The word that used to come alive sits flat on the page. You are not backsliding. You are heat exhausted.

The Psalmist knew this place. In Psalm 42:11 he was talking to his own soul, asking why it was so downcast, reminding himself to put his hope in God even when hope felt like an effort. He did not pretend the heat was not real. He just refused to let it be the final word.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, You know the conditions I am carrying right now. Where I am drained and struggling to move, restore what the heat has taken. Amen.

Reflection Question: What spiritual condition has been quietly draining you lately?
