Officer In The Median
Proverbs 15:3 – “The eyes of the LORD are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.
Traffic is moving at whatever pace traffic has decided to move, which on most highways means somewhere comfortably above the posted limit. Nobody is thinking about speed. Everyone has somewhere to be and the road is open. Then somebody in the left lane taps their brakes, and within seconds the tap travels backward through the pack like a wave. You already know what it means before you even see it. Sure enough, a State Trooper is parked in the median, lights off, watching the flow of traffic in both directions. He is not chasing anyone. He is simply present, and that presence alone reorganizes the behavior of every driver within a quarter mile. People who were doing eighty are suddenly doing sixty-five, phones go face down, and mirrors get checked for the first time in miles.
Every one of those drivers already knew the speed limit before they saw the trooper. The rules were not new information. What changed was the awareness of being watched, and that awareness was enough to close the gap between how they had been driving and how they knew they were supposed to be driving.
Most of us carry that same gap in our spiritual lives, and it is worth being honest about it. We know what God requires. We have read it, heard it preached, and agreed with it in principle. But there is a version of ourselves that tends to appear when we believe no one is paying attention, and the distance between that version and our public one can be significant. Hebrews 4:13 does not allow for unobserved moments. Nothing in all creation is hidden from His sight. Every person will give account.
Living under that reality is not meant to produce anxiety. It is meant to produce integrity, the kind that does not require an audience because it has settled the question of who is always watching. The trooper eventually pulls out of the median and drives away. God never does, and the life that understands that drives the same speed whether the median is empty or not.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me live with the constant awareness that You see everything I do, every choice I make, and every motive behind it. Amen.
Reflection Question: If you lived every moment of this week with a genuine awareness that God was watching, what is the first thing that would change?
