Used Medication
Psalm 147:3 – “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
There is something sobering about picking up an old prescription bottle and realizing how many pills are gone. The bottle was full once, and now it is not, and each one of those missing tablets represents a moment when the pain was real enough to require something from outside the body to manage it. Nobody takes pain medication for fun. You reach for it when whatever you are dealing with has crossed a threshold that rest and patience alone cannot address. The body sent a signal, the signal was honest, and the medication was the appropriate response to what was actually happening.
What the bottle tells you, without any editorializing, is that there have been seasons. Seasons when something was wrong enough to need intervention. Most people look at that bottle and think about the physical moments it represents, a surgery, a bad back, a injury that took longer to heal than expected. But the more interesting thing about that bottle is what it says about the nature of pain itself. Some things do not resolve on their own. Some conditions require medicine, and the person who refuses to take what has been prescribed suffers longer than they needed to.
There are spiritual conditions that work the same way. Bitterness that has been carried too long, guilt that has never been properly released, grief that has been managed rather than surrendered, fear that has become so familiar it no longer feels like fear. These are not conditions that positive thinking or more discipline will resolve. They require something from outside ourselves, and Psalm 34:18 says that God is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. That is not poetry. That is a prescription.
The bottle on the shelf is honest about what it took to get through certain seasons. The question worth asking is whether we have been as honest about what our current season actually requires, and whether we have been willing to take what the Lord has already made available.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, You know exactly what I am carrying and what it has cost me. Where I have been managing instead of surrendering, give me the courage to bring it fully to You. Amen.
Reflection Question: What spiritual condition have you been trying to manage on your own and what has it cost you?
