The Red Light Is On

Matthew 5:14 – “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Every television in standby mode has a small red light that glows on the front of the set. It is subtle enough that most people stop noticing it after a while, but it is always there, a quiet signal that the television is connected to power but not currently doing what it was built to do. The screen is dark. No picture, no sound, no content being delivered to anyone in the room. The connection to the outlet is real and uninterrupted. The television is not broken. It is simply not on, and the red light is the only outward evidence that anything is happening at all.

What makes the red light worth thinking about is what it communicates without intending to. It tells you the television is present, that it has access to everything it needs to function, and that it has chosen, or been placed in, a state where none of that access is being used for its actual purpose. The power is available. The capacity is there. The screen remains dark anyway.

There are believers who live in exactly that condition. The connection is real. They are in the church, they know the language, they have access to everything the faith makes available. But the screen is dark. Nothing is being displayed to the people around them that would cause anyone to stop and take notice. No warmth, no light, no evidence that the power they are connected to is actually moving through them in any visible way. The red light is on, which means they are present and accounted for, but presence alone was never the assignment.

Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 5:16 to let their light shine before others so that people would see their good works and glorify the Father. That is not a passive instruction. A television does not turn itself on. Someone has to make a deliberate decision to move it out of standby, and the screen that comes to life in a dark room changes everything about that room.

The red light was never meant to be the final state.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, I do not want to simply be connected. I want to be on, fully displaying what Your power looks like moving through a life that has surrendered to You. Amen.

Reflection Question: What is currently being displayed on your screen, and does it reflect the power you are connected to?
