Dirty Socks
1 Corinthians 15:33 – “Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character.”
Put on a pair of white socks and walk through the house without shoes and something happens almost immediately. The bottoms begin to pick up everything the floor has collected since it was last cleaned. Dust, dirt, whatever was tracked in from outside, all of it transfers directly to the sock. By the time you have made a few trips from the bedroom to the kitchen and back, what started out white is telling a different story. The sock did not go looking for anything. It simply made contact with its environment, and its environment left a mark.
The interesting thing is that the sock does not have to do anything wrong for this to happen. It does not have to be careless or rebellious. Exposure alone is sufficient. Whatever the floor has been collecting, the sock will carry, and the longer the contact continues the more visible the evidence becomes. A quick trip across a clean floor leaves very little. Extended time in the wrong environment leaves something that does not wash out easily.
Most of us understand this instinctively about the physical world but resist applying it to our spiritual lives. We believe we are resilient enough, grounded enough, mature enough to move through certain environments without picking anything up. And sometimes that confidence is genuine. But Proverbs 13:20 is straightforward about the math: walk with the wise and you become wise, but the companion of fools suffers harm. The floor does not ask the sock’s permission before transferring what it carries.
What you are consistently exposed to will eventually show up on you. The only real question is whether you are paying attention to what your socks look like.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me the wisdom to make different choices before the evidence becomes impossible to ignore. Amen.
Reflection Question: What environment has been leaving marks on you that you have been slow to acknowledge?
