The GPS
Isaiah 30:21 – “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.'”
Anyone who has used a GPS long enough has heard those words at least once. You missed the turn, or decided you knew a better route, or simply were not paying attention when the instruction came, and after a brief pause the device says the same thing every time. Recalculating. No lecture, no extended commentary on the decision that was just made, no comparison to how the trip was supposed to go. Just a new set of directions from wherever you currently are to wherever you are still trying to get.
What the GPS does not do is abandon the destination. The place you were headed before you missed the turn is still the place it is trying to get you to. The route has changed because your position has changed, but the endpoint has not moved. The device adjusts to your current reality and begins working from there, which is a useful picture up to a point, because unlike a GPS, God was never surprised by the turn you missed. He knew before you left the driveway exactly which turns you would take and which ones you would not.
That is what makes His guidance so different from anything else available to us. He is not responding to our detours. He already accounted for them. Jeremiah 29:11 says His plans are to prosper and not to harm, to give a future and a hope, and that was written to people already deep into consequences of their own choosing. God’s knowledge of where you are going has never been dependent on where you have been, and the voice behind you saying this is the way has not changed its instruction just because you took a different road.
The GPS recalculates because it had to. God simply knew, and He is still pointing toward the same destination He had in mind before you started.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, you knew the road I would take before I took it, and Your purpose for my life remains unchanged. Help me trust Your direction from wherever I am right now. Amen.
Reflection Question: How does knowing that God already accounted for your detours change the way you approach navigating to the path He has for you?
