The Waiting Room
Psalm 27:14 – “Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.”
Nobody goes to a waiting room because they want to. You go because whatever you actually came for requires you to get through the waiting room first. The chairs are rarely comfortable, the magazines are months old, and the television mounted in the corner is playing something nobody would have chosen. You take a seat, check the time, check it again, and settle into the particular kind of restlessness that comes from being in a place where nothing you do will make what you are waiting for arrive any faster.
What makes a waiting room tolerable is knowing that something is happening on the other side of the door even when you cannot see it. The doctor is not ignoring you. The process is moving. Your name is in the system and it will be called. The wait is not evidence that you have been forgotten. It is simply the nature of the thing you came for. Some things cannot be rushed without being ruined, and the waiting room exists because the work being done requires the time it requires regardless of how long the chairs have been occupied.
Most of us handle the waiting rooms of life the way we handle the literal ones. We get restless. We check the time. We start wondering whether something has gone wrong or whether we were somehow overlooked. Isaiah 40:31 says that those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength, and the word used there for wait carries the idea of expectant hope, not passive resignation. It is the posture of someone who knows their name is in the system and has settled into that confidence rather than fighting the clock.
The door will open. What is being prepared for you on the other side is worth the wait.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, when the room feels long and the clock feels slow, remind me that You have not forgotten my name and that what You are preparing cannot be rushed. Amen.
Reflection Question: What are you currently in a waiting room for, and have you been waiting with expectant hope or doubt?
