The Branches Died

John 15:5 – “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

There were branches on the ground in the yard, recently separated from the vine they had been growing on, and what was striking was not that they were dead but how quickly it had happened. Yesterday they were part of something living. Today they were dry and brittle, snapping without resistance, the green completely gone from them. There had been no gradual decline visible from the outside, no warning period where they looked distressed before they looked dead. The separation happened, and the deterioration followed almost immediately, as if the branch had been living entirely on borrowed time from the moment it lost its connection.

That is actually exactly what was happening. A branch does not have life of its own. It has access to life through the vine, and that access is the only thing standing between it and what it becomes when the connection is lost. The branch that looks healthy and full is not generating anything. It is receiving. The moment that receiving stops, the countdown begins, and as it turns out the countdown is shorter than most people would assume.

That speed is the part worth sitting with. We tend to think of spiritual disconnection as something that announces itself slowly, a gradual cooling that gives plenty of time to course correct before anything serious happens. But the branches in the yard did not take weeks to wither. They were gone by morning. John 15:6 says that the branch that does not remain in the vine is like a branch that is thrown away and withers. The withering is not the threat of a distant consequence. It is the natural and immediate result of a broken connection.

We are never as far from that brittleness as we think we are, and we are never closer to life than when we stay on the vine.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, remind me that whatever I appear to be producing means nothing if I have quietly drifted from You. Amen.

Reflection Question: How much time passed since you last genuinely connected with God in prayer?
