The Hidden Sign

Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

It happens gradually enough that most people do not notice it happening at all. A stop sign that was perfectly visible at the beginning of spring is still standing in the same place by midsummer, still doing everything a stop sign is supposed to do except the one thing that actually matters. The bushes around it have been growing the entire time, quietly and without any particular urgency, and somewhere between April and July the sign went from partially obscured to almost completely hidden. The red is still there. The letters are still there. The sign itself has not moved or changed. It has simply been covered by something that was allowed to grow unchecked around it.

The danger is not the bush. The bush is doing what bushes do when nobody tends to them. The danger is the driver who approaches that intersection assuming the way is clear because nothing visible is telling them to stop. The sign’s authority did not diminish because the sign became harder to see. The intersection is just as dangerous as it ever was. But a warning that cannot be seen cannot be heeded, and a stop that is not made because the sign was buried carries the same consequences as a stop that was refused deliberately.

God places stop signs in our lives, through His word, through the counsel of people who love us, through the quiet conviction that arrives before a bad decision is finalized. Those signs do not move. They do not lose their authority because a season has passed. But we allow things to grow up around them. A relationship that has been slowly encroaching on our judgment. A habit that has gotten large enough to block the view. An appetite that has been fed long enough that it now sits between us and whatever God was trying to show us. None of it grew overnight, and that is exactly what makes it easy to miss.

Proverbs 4:26 says to give careful thought to the paths of your feet. That is a trimming instruction as much as it is a navigation one.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, show me what has been allowed to grow up around the signs You have placed in my path. Amen.

Reflection Question: What has been quietly growing in your life that has begun to obscure something God has already made clear to you?
