The Highlighter

Hebrews 4:12 – “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

nyone who has ever read seriously with a highlighter in hand knows the particular satisfaction of dragging that color across a line that stops you. Something in the text rose above the surrounding material, demanded to be marked, and the highlighter was the way of saying this one matters, I do not want to lose this. The rest of the page remains unmarked, not because it is without value, but because not everything carries the same weight. The highlighter is a tool of discernment as much as it is a tool of emphasis, and anyone who has read the Bible with one knows that certain passages have a way of reaching up off the page and demanding the color before you have even finished the sentence.

That kind of reading produces a record over time. Come back to a marked Bible a year later and the highlights are still there, a map of the moments when something specific was trying to get through. Some of those marked lines still carry the same weight they did the first time. Others belonged to a season that has since passed. And occasionally a person reads back through their own highlighted verses and realizes they marked the right things but never actually changed because of them. The color was applied, the truth was acknowledged, and then life continued largely as it had before.

God highlights things outside of Scripture as well. A sermon lands on something with a precision that does not feel like coincidence. A conversation turns toward exactly the thing that has been quietly unresolved. The same issue surfaces in three unrelated places within the same week. These are not accidents. They are emphasis, and Hebrews 4:12 reminds us that the word of God is alive and active, which means it is still marking things, still penetrating, still identifying what needs attention whether we respond to it or not.

The question is never whether we noticed the highlight. It is what we did after we put the book down.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me the honesty to acknowledge what You have been emphasizing and the courage to act on it rather than simply admiring the color on the page. Amen.

Reflection Question: What has God been consistently highlighting in your life recently?
