Folded Clothes
Philippians 1:6 – “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”
A pile of clean laundry on a bed has a way of expanding to fill whatever space is available to it. Shirts draped over pants, socks scattered across the surface, everything technically clean but occupying far more room than it needs to because nothing has been organized yet. The washing is done, which is the most important part, but the pile in its current state is not particularly useful to anyone. You cannot find what you need in it without disrupting everything else, and putting it away in that condition is not really an option. Clean is not the same as ready.
The folding is what changes the relationship between the clothes and the space they occupy. A shirt that was taking up the better part of a square foot gets reduced to a neat rectangle that stacks with everything else. Pants that were sprawled across the bed fold into something that fits cleanly on a shelf. The same volume of clothing that looked unmanageable twenty minutes ago now fits in a drawer with room to spare. Nothing new was added and nothing was removed. The folding simply brought everything into the form it was always supposed to take.
God works on lives the way a careful hand works through a pile of laundry. The cleaning has already happened, covered by grace that cost more than we will ever fully understand. But the folding is an ongoing process, and it requires His hands more than ours. The habits that are taking up more room than they should, the attitudes sprawled across spaces they were never meant to occupy, the parts of a life that are clean in principle but still unorganized in practice. He moves through all of it with patience, bringing each piece into the shape it was designed to hold.
Philippians 1:6 says He who began a good work in you will carry it through to completion. The pile on the bed is not the final state. He is still folding.
Today’s Prayer: Lord, thank You for the cleaning You have already done in my life. Now help me submit to the folding, the parts of me that still need to be brought into order. Amen.
Reflection Question: What area of your life is currently sitting in a clean but unfolded pile?
