House Cat

Psalm 84:10 – “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere.”

The house cat sat on the windowsill, tail flicking, eyes locked on something in the alley below. Another cat was down there, thin, moving low along the fence line, stopping every few feet to check what was watching it. Rain had soaked its fur flat against its ribs. It froze at a passing car, then kept moving, always scanning, never settling. The house cat watched all of this from behind the glass, warm, dry, fed twice that day already, with nowhere urgent to be and nothing chasing it.

For a moment the house cat’s tail twitched harder, as if some old instinct recognized the alley and wanted out into it. Cats do that. They forget, sometimes, which side of the glass keeps them safe.

People do the same thing. We watch a version of life playing out beyond our own walls, someone else’s choices, someone else’s freedom from rules we live under, and something in us wants a taste of what is out there. We forget what that life actually costs the ones living it. The alley looks like freedom from inside a warm house. It rarely is from inside the alley.

David wrote that one day in the Lord’s courts was better than a thousand spent anywhere else, and he had lived both sides of that comparison before he wrote it. He knew what it cost to run from where God kept him. Those who dwell in the house of the Lord are not fenced in. They are fenced out from a hunger that never gets satisfied, a cold that never fully leaves, a watchfulness that never rests.

The alley cat is still out there tonight, checking the shadows. The house cat is asleep on the sill.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, when I’m tempted to envy what lies outside Your will for me, remind me what it actually costs to live there. Keep me content within Your care. Amen.

Reflection Question: Is there an area of your life where you’ve been eyeing the “freedom” outside God’s boundaries?
