Unpaved Road

Philippians 1:6 – “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.”

The road had been torn up for two weeks now. Every morning on the way to work, another stretch of asphalt was gone, ground down to gravel and dust by machines that crawled along at a pace that seemed almost stubborn. No detour signs, no finished sections to point to yet, just the steady sound of grinding and the smell of hot tar drifting through the car vents. One day it looked like nothing had changed at all. The next day, half a block had disappeared down to bare earth.

Nobody repaves over broken asphalt and calls it finished. The old surface has to come up first, every inch of it, before anything new can be laid down that will actually last.

Sanctification tends to move at that same unhurried pace. Paul told the Philippians he was confident that the One who began a good work in them would carry it through to completion, and that confidence rested on God’s character, not on speed. The removal stage rarely feels like progress while it is happening. It feels like loss, like something familiar being stripped away. But that is exactly what has to happen before God lays anything new down. He does not resurface what He has not first cleared.

The crew working that road knew something the drivers stuck behind it did not always remember. Every day of grinding was a day closer to smooth pavement, not further from it. God works the same way in us. The tearing up is not Him giving up on the road. It is Him getting it ready to be resurfaced.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me patience to walk with You through the tearing up, trusting You for what comes after. Amen.

Reflection Question: What is God currently stripping away in your life right now?
