When No One Is Watching

Proverbs 15:3 – “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.”

The light was red, and the street was nearly empty at that hour, just a delivery truck idling two blocks back and a few porch lights still on. Then a car came through the intersection without slowing, straight through the red, gone before the light even had a chance to change back. No other cars were close enough to hit. No camera flashed. As far as that driver could tell, nobody had seen a thing.

That moment reveals something worth sitting with. Character is not what shows up when a person expects an audience. It is what shows up when the driver is convinced there is no audience at all. Plenty of people can hold themselves together at church, at work, in front of people whose opinion matters to them. The real question is what happens at the empty intersection, the quiet moment, the decision made in a room with the door shut and nobody checking.

Solomon wrote that the eyes of the Lord are in every place, watching the wicked and the good alike. That verse was never meant to feel like surveillance. It was meant to be a comfort and a check in the same breath, a reminder that no early morning is ever truly empty and no red light ever goes unnoticed, even the ones that feel private. God is not waiting at the next intersection to catch anyone. He was already there before the car arrived.

The driver who ran that light believed no one was watching. Someone always is.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, help me live with the same integrity in private that I show in public, remembering You see every moment. Amen.

Reflection Question: Is there an area of your life where your behavior changes depending on who is or isn’t watching?
