Mist On The Grass

Ephesians 2:10 – “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works.”

The golf course was buried in mist that morning, thick enough that the fairways looked like nothing more than a gray sheet stretched over the hills. From the road, there was no telling what was happening underneath it, no shape, no movement, nothing but fog sitting low over the grass. Then, closer to the fence line, a sound cut through the quiet. A groundskeeper was out there on a mower, cutting a straight line through grass nobody could see from a distance, working steadily inside a cloud that swallowed him within a few feet in every direction.

From the road, the course looked like it was doing nothing at all. It took getting close enough to hear the mower before the truth became obvious. Most people never get that close. They see the mist from a distance, decide there is nothing behind it, and keep driving.

People do the same thing with each other. Someone can look unremarkable from a distance, maybe even a little rough, and it is easy to assume that is the whole story, because the mist is all anyone bothers to look at. Paul told the Ephesians they were God’s handiwork, created for good works He had already prepared in advance, and that kind of work is rarely visible from the road. It shows up only to the ones willing to slow down, walk closer, and listen for the mower running underneath the fog.

The groundskeeper never stopped working just because the mist kept people from seeing him. God rarely does either. The mist only fools the ones who never get close enough to check.

Today’s Prayer: Lord, give me eyes to see the work You are doing in people I might otherwise dismiss at a distance. Amen.

Reflection Question: Is there someone in your life you’ve judged based only on the “mist”?
